A transliterator is a tool or software class that converts text from one writing system (script) to another based on phonetic similarity.

Unlike a translator, a transliterator changes the letters, not the meaning of the words. It maps characters from a source alphabet to a target alphabet so that an unfamiliar script can be read and pronounced by someone who doesn’t speak the original language. Transliteration vs. Translation vs. Transcription

Because these concepts are easily confused, it helps to understand their structural differences: Input Example Output Example Transliteration Converts characters to map sounds across scripts. Москва (Cyrillic) Moskva (Latin) Translation Converts the actual meaning of the words. Москва (Russian) Moscow (English) Transcription Maps the precise spoken sounds using a standard system.
