A forum thread (also called a topic) is an organized, asynchronous online conversation centered around a single question or statement. It begins with an initial message—known as the original post (OP)—and grows as other community members post their replies over time. Structure of a Forum Thread
Forums rely on a structured hierarchy to keep conversations tidy and permanent:
Categories / Sub-forums: Broad thematic sections (e.g., “Tech Support” or “Cooking Tips”) that house the threads.
The Thread Starter (OP): The first post that establishes the topic, asks a question, or sets a prompt.
Replies: Successive messages posted by other users reacting to the OP or to previous replies. Common Thread Features
Bumping: When someone replies to a thread, it automatically jumps to the top of the forum list to show recent activity. Users sometimes post short messages just to “bump” a topic back into view.
Sticky / Pinned Threads: Important threads (like community rules or FAQ guides) that moderators lock to the very top of the forum so they never drop down.
Moderation: Community managers or moderators can lock threads (disabling further replies), merge duplicate threads, or delete posts that break rules. Display Formats
Depending on the forum software, threads are usually viewed in one of two layouts:
