Vista Firewall Control

To configure the Windows Vista Firewall for better security, you must move past the basic Control Panel and enable two-way filtering (both inbound and outbound protection). By default, Vista allows all outgoing connections, meaning malware could secretly send your data to the internet.

You can lock down your system securely by configuring the native Windows Firewall with Advanced Security management console. Step 1: Open the Advanced Management Console Click the Start menu. Type wf.msc into the search box and press Enter.

Click Continue if a User Account Control (UAC) prompt appears.

This opens the Windows Firewall with Advanced Security interface. Step 2: Enable Outbound Filtering (Two-Way Protection)

In the center pane under the Overview section, click Windows Firewall Properties.

Look at the top tabs: Domain Profile, Private Profile, and Public Profile.

For each individual tab, change the settings to the following strict ruleset: Firewall State: On (recommended) Inbound Connections: Block (default) Outbound Connections: Change from “Allow” to Block Click Apply, then OK.

⚠️ Note: Blocking outbound connections by default will temporarily stop programs (including Internet Explorer) from connecting to the internet until you create explicit rules allowing them. Step 3: Create Custom Rules for Trusted Programs

Since you are now blocking all unauthorized outgoing traffic, you must manually whitelist the applications you trust: In the left panel, click on Outbound Rules.
